The Richwoods
photo taken by Pam'la Motown

The Richwoods are a Sussex-based ukulele trio sporting short, sharp instrumentals for the discerning palate.

Imagine a musical collision between Ennio Morricone, Roy Budd and George Formby and you might get an idea of what The Richwoods have to offer. Or, if your imagination isn't quite up to scratch, simply listen to the selection of tracks on the relevant page indicated to the right and watch the live footage in the Watch section.

If you'd like to get in touch with The Richwoods, try dropping them a line at therichwoods@googlemail.com.

Enjoy.

The Richwoods

Listen

Almost as soon as Dan and Dave started playing their ukuleles, they started coming up with tunes. The general process behind this is: Dave comes up with the rhythm part, records it, emails the tune to Dan who then adds a jaunty lead line over the top and emails it back.

Tracey's come up with some stonking tunes too, but the process there is somewhat different. She turns up at a rehearsal, says something along the lines of: "I've got a new tune, but it's rubbish" and then proceeds to play something which isn't.

Have a listen:

THE RICHWOODS LIVE AT SCALEDOWN 28th NOVEMBER 2008

Recorded by Andy Coules. Here it is in its entirety: here
A word of warning. There's quite a lot of bad language on this as well as a significant amount of faffing around between being introduced and the performance actually starting. One day, Dave will get round to editing the original recording.

WHALEY'S KITCHEN SESSIONS: 1st August 2008

We gathered around a single USB mic in Dan's kitchen and recorded some new versions of older stuff along with a new tune (bearing the wistful, elegant title of Piss and Curry) from Tracey. Also along for the fun and games was Clive on his rather elegant cavaquinho. Listen to the results of a superb evening by clicking on the links below.

Bag Of Hats

I Was Dave Brubeck's Neighbour

George Formby Hootenanny

Piss and Curry
Tracey: 'This one was 'inspired' by the lodger from hell. Things had been going downhill pretty much from the moment my lodger arrived and a month later I woke up on a Sunday morning, vaguely aware that he had arrived home very late the previous night. I stumbled half-asleep into my bathroom and stepped in a puddle of wee on the floor. This, you would think, was bad enough, but I then went into the kitchen for something to mop it up with and skidded on some chicken curry that was all over the floor, and the fridge, and the walls. I am at a loss to put my feelings about this into words, so here's a song instead - I'm not sure it's really screaming 'bastard!' though.'

Snow On The Sea

Stabbing The Cat

Uke Crazy Mother

ORIGINAL DEMOS - FEBRUARY 2008 - JUNE 2008

George Formby Hootenanny : click here
Tell someone you play a ukulele and the reaction, generally, is laughter and a bad impression of George Formby singing When I'm Cleaning Windows. Actually, though, Mr Formby generally played a banjo-uke. It's called George Formby Hootenanny nonetheless for no other reason than it's a good title.

I Was Dave Brubeck's Neighbour : click here
Dave says: "I wasn't his neighbour. But I did try to do a Take Five-ish type tune. It didn't really work out so I kept the chords and did this instead. When we played this live recently, everyone tittered at the title, which I'd never thought was particularly funny. Which goes to show that I'm no judge of anything."

Uke Crazy Mother : click here
Dave again: "The first one I ever wrote and sent to Dan, after he'd sent me one of his and I couldn't think of a lead line to play over the top. The title says it all - not that my Mum likes ukuleles to an excessive degree, but that once I'd bought a ukulele I discovered how bloody addictive they are."

Yee Haw : click here
'I'm coming up with a three chord hillbilly foot-tapper,' announced Dave to Dan in an email one morning. He didn't. It's not hillbilly, but it's got three chords (G, C and D7 if you want to play along) and it's definitely a foot-tapper.

Bag Of Hats : click here
The first tune that Dan composed on the ukulele and recorded originally as Uku-Whaley. The current title is a reference to the cause of a bizarre accident that led to Dan scratching the cornea of his eye. As opposed to the cornea in his knee, of course. You can hear the original version by visiting www.danwhaley.co.uk/ and heading for the downloads page. We would also recommend that you take the time to have a good look round the rest of Dan's highly entertaining and informative site.

Yo Mama : click here
Dan did the rhythm part and the lead line and sent it to Dave, who responded by wishing that he'd thought of it first.

Pipe Cleaner :
Dave: 'I really don't think too long and hard about titles. I called this one Pipe Cleaner simply because it was the first thing I thought of after I'd recorded it. It has no significance whatsoever. But for some reason, it fits. But I'd probably be saying that even if I'd called it Bum Fluff.'

Terence Rigby : click here
Again, no significance whatsoever. Terence Rigby is the actor at the beginning of Get Carter who says 'We don't want you going up The North, Jack,' to Michael Caine. But he's done loads of other stuff too.

Big Frog : click here
Dave was attempting to come up with something vaguely Flamenco-ish, having been switched on to the delights of Rodrigo y Gabriela. It sort of worked.

One Thirty-Three And Counting : click here
Dave: 'I love the Herman's Hermits recording (their original one, not the subsequent re-recordings which are an insult) of Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter. So I learned the chords for the intro and verse, changed the key and took a few out and came up with this. When I looked up at the end of recording my bit, I noticed the counter was at 1' 33". Hence the title.

Snow On The Sea : click here
Tracey: 'So my original inspiration for this masterpiece was waking up on a Sunday in March (was it?) and finding 3 inches of snow outside. It doesn't often snow in Brighton and I find it quite odd that it snows on the beach. The song is supposed to reflect the calmness of the falling snow vs. the (slightly) crashing waves of the sea. I sound like an arse.'

Let's Get Out Of It : click here
Dave: 'Do The Richwoods really need another tune that has the F and C7 chords in it? No. But just in case, here it is.'

Stabbing The Cat : click here
Dan: 'This one was penned while I was lounging around the pool in Majorca. The title is of course a euphemism for relaxing in a gentlemanly way, which is not, I hasten to add, what I was doing whilst lounging around the pool. Oh no, in fact to quote George Formby, I was sitting there with my little ukulele in my hand...'

Crikey : click here
Dave: 'The lead line that Dan came up with has a bit in it that's very reminiscent of a Bobby Vee song, but I can't recall the title. Crikey is just too good a word not to use as a song title.'

Ground Loop Isolator : click here
Dan: 'A Ground Loop Isolator is an obscure piece of sound equipment used by Andy Coules, the highly talented recording engineer and one of my co-curators at Scaledown. But what, you may ask, does one use a Ground Loop Isolator for? Alas I have absolutely no idea, as despite Andy's repeated attempts to explain to me what it does, it just won't stick. Still, I like the sound of it, hence I named this song after it.'

Cheesecake : click here
Tracey: 'This song is dedicated to a really amazing piece of cheesecake I experienced a couple of months ago in Boston (US). I had eaten a giant meal beforehand, so I had half of it that evening and the rest for breakfast the next morning. Stunning.'

Who Are The Richwoods?

The Richwoods are mainly:

Dave Hopkins . . . . . tenor uke

Dan Whaley . . . . . concert uke

Tracey Osmond . . . . . concert uke

with

Danny O'Brien . . . . . baritone uke

Clive Pearman . . . . . cavaquinho

A brief biography:

December 2007
In an outrageous and, frankly, slightly irritating display of musical dexterity, Dan Whaley borrows Tracey Osmond's ukulele and learns to play it in five minutes.

Meanwhile, just down the road in Brighton, raconteur, wit, script-writer and wine-taster Dave Hopkins fails to add ‘acoustic country blues guitarist’ to a series of lies about his achievements and starts thinking about taking up another instrument to not learn to play properly.

Over in Hove, Tracey sits in her flat wondering when she’ll get her ukulele back off Dan. When she does, she vows to master that D7 chord.

January 2008
Dan orders a Richwood concert ukulele. Inspired by Dan’s can-do attitude and gripped by a rather childish Mine’s-Bigger-Than-Yours obsession, Dave promptly orders a Richwood tenor uke. Although Dan’s arrives first, Dave’s tenor uke really is bigger than his. Meanwhile, in Hove, that D7 is coming along a treat.

February 2008
Dan sends Dave a home-recorded ukulele tune via email. Dave attempts to come up with a lead line and discovers that he can’t play lead ukulele lines to save his life. So, to compensate, he starts emailing his own tunes to Dan at a frightening rate. Dan sends them back at an even more frightening rate complete with lead lines.

March 2008
Dan, Dave and Tracey start thinking about forming a ukulele group, along with fellow uke enthusiasts Danny O’Brien (baritone ukulele) and Clive Pearman (cavaquinho) and a host of other possible candidates. Dave, Dan, Danny and Clive rehearse together. Tracey doesn’t make it. She’s somewhere else, practising D7. They discover that playing cover versions doesn’t quite work. But the originals sound good. Possible band names are offered. These include Uke Hunt, The Dancing Fleas and The Bum-Faced Monkeys.

April 2008
Dan, Dave and Tracey rehearse together for the first time in Tracey's flat, surrounded by lava lamps. There's no alcohol or biscuits, but the tunes sound good. Dan can't stop dancing.

Two more rehearsals follow round at Dan’s in Burgess Hill and The Richwoods are finally born.

Tuesday 10th June 2008 - The Old Explorer, London W1
A fantastic bash celebrating Howlin' Wolf's 98th birthday. A collectiveglass was also raised to the memory of the recently departed Bo Diddley.

Saturday 14th June 2008 - Dan and Ruth's Musical Barbecue
Not strictly a gig, and Tracey was otherwise engaged in Dublin, but we had such a good time that it's worth mentioning.

Dan and his wife Ruth arranged a musical barbecue in their back garden. In other words, guests bought along their musical instruments and we all had a good strum and warble. Dan and Dave got up and did George Formby Hootenanny. Here's a photograph from the event. Dan's the one in the hat. Dave isn't.

19th July, 2008: The Prince Albert, Brighton with Los Fantasticos and The Flaming Czars.
This time Dave wasn't there, so Dan and Tracey plucked a few numbers.

12th August, 2008: Fishguard Folk Club, Royal Oak, Fishguard, Wales
Dan and Dave happened to be on holiday in Wales at the same time with their respective families and took the opportunity to nip over to Fishguard Folk Club one evening. As well as enjoying the moment when the entire pub fell silent when they started playing (due to the unamplified sounds of the ukes rather than shocked admiration at the skill with which they were being played), Dan and Dave also witnessed a very rousing version of What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor along with some fine Irish fiddle music. A fantastic evening out.

20th September, 2008: Oxford House, Bethnal Green, London
The Richwoods, along with Don Tempi and The Flaming Czars and a few others, played a fundraising event in aid of Red Cross at Oxford House in London’s beautiful Bethnal Green. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets was the backdrop to a great evening’s entertainment. The Richwoods started off the proceedings with a storming 15 minute set. The crowd whooped and clapped enthusiastically. No one danced, though. Spoilsports.

Here are some fine photos of the event, taken by Fleur Neale.
28th November, 2008: Scaledown @ The King & Queen, 1 Foley Street,London

This was a cracking gig in front of an enthusiastic audience, with all five members of The Richwoods taking to the stage. Click here to listen to the entire gig, intros and all.

30th December, 2008: Round Georges, Brighton, East Sussex.

Just Dan and Dave for a relaxed post-Christmas. The set was so well received that The Richwoods have been invited back to play an extended set in on March 3rd.

Fri 6th Feb: Hove Folk Club

Run by the legendary Robb Johnson, Hove Folk Club takes place on the first Friday of every month at the Eclipse pub in Montgomery Street, Hove. For more information on the club and the venue, click here.

The gig itself was an absolute corker, which we did as a duo (Dan and Dave again). See below for some snaps, taken by Simon Drew.

If those whet your appetite, click here for some more photos from the evening, including some snaps of Robb Johnson, taken by Dave.

Tues 3rd March: Round Georges
14-15 Sutherland Rd Brighton, BN2 0EQ

Two sets of short, sharp ukulele instrumentals from all three of us this time, featuring the first live airings of Pocketful of Stones, Crikey and 1 Minute 33 And Counting.

Saturday 28th March : Komedia, Brighton

The Richwoods (Dan and Dave in this case) took to the big stage of the Komedia to ply their ukulele instrumental trade to a small crowd of enthusiastic people. It was indeed a hoot. Also on the bill were some pole-dancing air hostesses, which Dan and Dave missed due to talking to the organiser about children's party entertainers.

Tuesday 31st March : 6Bells Folk and Blues Club, Chiddingly. Another Tracey-less set in this excellent long established club, in a fantastic pub in the absolute arse end of nowhere.

Friday 1st May: Hove Folk Club, The Eclipse PH, Montgomery Street, Hove The Richwoods returned as a threesome to Robb Johnson's excellent once a monther. Main act was Roger Watson.

Tuesday 20th October : The Woolpack, Burgess Hill, West Sussex

Dan and Geoff Graham (Dan's cohort in The Flaming Czars) are dabbling in running their own folk night and this was the inaugural meeting. A bunch of musicians gathered round a table near the fireplace in The Woolpack in Burgess Hill and a very entertaining evening it was too. It was also Dave's birthday, so there was a double celebration going on. Dave bought along his newly acquired (he'd got it that day) Kala Archtop tenor ukulele and put it through its paces. Tracey wasn't there, unfortunately. A cracking night of music, a great atmosphere (apart from a near bar room brawl which, thankfully, was nothing to do with any of the musicians) and a real mix of musicians. From The Richwoods' short sharp ukulele instrumentals to The Flaming Czars' East European folk on accordion and guitar, via John Zonn's witty and almost impossible to describe act which involved some simultaneous translations of lyrics in French and Spanish, it was a great evening. Long may the folk night at the Woolpack continue.
